First class is shrinking. Fewer airlines offer it, and those that do offer it on fewer routes, which makes choosing the right one matter more than ever. The 2026 Skytrax World Airline Awards, based on a global passenger survey covering more than 300 airlines, have named Air France the world's best airline for first class, ahead of Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa, Emirates, and Cathay Pacific. Here is what the top five do differently, and how to choose between them for your next long-haul flight.

Air France took the top spot in 2026, and it also won the awards for best first class comfort amenities and best first class lounge dining. Its La Premiere cabin is famously private, with a suite that feels more like a small hotel room than an aeroplane seat, and its lounge dining in Paris is widely considered the best in the world. The catch is availability: La Premiere flies on a limited number of routes, and it is almost always a cash booking rather than an award ticket, so it is the hardest of the top five to actually fly.

Singapore Airlines came second overall and won the award for the world's best first class seat, for its Suites on the A380. The Suites are enclosed cabins with a separate bed and doors that close properly, which no rival has fully matched. Singapore also won the overall World's Best Airline title for 2026, its sixth time. The limitation is booking: Suites are available through Singapore's KrisFlyer programme only, and partner programmes cannot book them, so you need KrisFlyer miles or a cash ticket. For the seat itself, though, Singapore remains the benchmark.

Lufthansa ranked third overall and won the award for the world's best first class onboard catering. Its new Allegris first class suites are a major step up, with private suites and a strong food and wine programme. The catch is that Lufthansa has largely stopped releasing first class award space to partner programmes, so for most travellers it is now a Miles and More booking or a cash fare. If you fly through Frankfurt or Munich, though, the ground experience, including the First Class Terminal, is one of the best in the world.

Emirates ranked fourth, and it offers the most reachable marquee first class experience. Its A380 suites have a shower spa on board, and its network is the widest of any first class airline, which means you can actually fly it on more routes than the others. Emirates First is also the easiest of the top five to book with points, including through Qantas. Cathay Pacific ranked fifth and won the award for the world's best first class airline lounge, for The Wing in Hong Kong, which is a calm, luxurious space that sets the tone for the flight. Cathay's service is famously consistent, and its first class on the 777 is one of the most reliable products in the sky.

The airline matters less than the aircraft. First class is aircraft-specific, not airline-specific, and the same airline can offer a superb suite on one aircraft and an average seat on another. Singapore flies its Suites only on the A380, Emirates flies its best product on the A380 and selected 777s, and Cathay flies first class only on the 777-300ER. Before you pay, confirm the exact aircraft on your route, because the wrong aircraft turns a first class ticket into a business class seat with a different label.

Also think about how you will book. If you are paying cash, Air France and Lufthansa offer the best ground experience in Europe. If you are using points, Emirates and Singapore are the most practical, though Singapore requires KrisFlyer miles for its best cabin. If you want the best food, fly Lufthansa. If you want the best seat, fly Singapore. And if you want the easiest first class experience to actually book and enjoy, Emirates is hard to beat. The best first class in 2026 is not one airline. It is the right airline, on the right aircraft, on the right route.

Air France leads the 2026 Skytrax first class ranking, followed by Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa, Emirates, and Cathay Pacific. The best choice depends on your route and how you book, and the aircraft matters more than the airline, so always confirm the exact plane before you pay.
