A luxury watch is a machine you wear on your wrist, which means it collects sweat, dust, sunscreen, and knocks every single day. Most damage to fine watches is not dramatic; it is slow and avoidable. A simple home routine, done consistently, keeps the watch looking sharp and running accurately for decades.
Daily cleaning takes less than a minute and makes the biggest difference. Wipe the case and crystal with a soft, lint-free cloth after wearing the watch to remove oils and dust before they build up. For metal bracelets, a soft brush with mild soapy water reaches between the links, but always check that the crown is pushed in or screwed down first, and dry the bracelet thoroughly afterwards. Never use harsh chemicals, abrasive cloths, or ultrasonic cleaners at home on a fine watch.
Each strap material needs its own care. Leather straps should be wiped with a slightly damp cloth and left to air-dry, kept away from water and direct sunlight, and occasionally treated with a suitable leather conditioner. Metal bracelets tolerate gentle washing as described above. Rubber or silicone straps can simply be rinsed with clean water to remove sweat and dust. If a strap shows cracking, fraying, or stretched spring bars, replace it before it fails and drops the watch.
Water resistance deserves respect rather than blind trust. A watch rated for swimming is not automatically safe for hot showers, saunas, or diving, because heat and soap degrade gaskets over time. Avoid pressing pushers or adjusting the crown underwater, and have the seals checked whenever the watch is serviced. If condensation ever appears under the crystal, take the watch to a watchmaker promptly rather than waiting for it to clear.
Storage is where many watches quietly deteriorate. Keep the watch in a lined watch box or pouch, away from direct sunlight, humidity, and strong magnetic fields such as phone chargers, speakers, and magnetic bag clasps, which can disturb accuracy. Store watches separately so metal cases and bracelets do not scratch each other. For automatic watches, a watch winder keeps the movement running when the watch is not worn, which prevents lubricants from settling, but a winder is optional: manually winding an unworn automatic occasionally achieves much of the same benefit.
Handling habits matter as well. Put the watch on after applying perfume, sunscreen, or insect repellent, and take it off for heavy lifting, contact sports, and DIY work. Even a scratch-resistant crystal can chip from a sharp impact, and a single hard knock can disturb a mechanical movement enough to affect timekeeping.
Professional servicing is the part home care cannot replace. Most manufacturers recommend a full service every three to five years, though some suggest longer intervals. During a service, a qualified watchmaker disassembles the movement, cleans and re-lubricates it, replaces worn gaskets, and checks accuracy and water resistance. Use an authorised service centre or a reputable independent watchmaker with the right parts and tools, and keep the service records: they support the watch's history and value.
A practical routine is easy to remember. Wipe the watch daily, wash metal bracelets gently when needed, store it in a cool, dry, lined case, keep it away from magnets and chemicals, and book a service every few years. None of this requires special skill, and all of it protects the precision engineering you paid for.
Treat a luxury watch the way you would any fine instrument: regular gentle care, sensible storage, and professional attention on schedule. Done that way, it stays accurate, looks its best, and remains something worth passing on.
