Black tie is the most formal dress code most people will ever encounter, and it is also the most forgiving, because the rules are clear. Get the core pieces right and you will look sharp regardless of budget. The mistakes that stand out are almost always in the details, not the suit itself. This guide covers the tuxedo, shirt, bow tie, shoes, grooming, and the small personal touches that separate a correct outfit from a memorable one.

A black-tie suit means a tuxedo, not a regular dark suit: satin or grosgrain lapels, a single button, and no vents or a double vent. Shawl lapels look softer and more classic, peak lapels look sharper and more formal, and both are correct, so choose the one that suits your face and build. Fit matters more than brand: shoulders that sit naturally without overhang, a jacket that closes without pulling, a sleeve that shows about a centimetre of shirt cuff, and trousers that break slightly over the shoe. A well-fitted rented tuxedo beats an expensive one that fits poorly, so budget for tailoring if you buy, and allow time for at least one fitting and one adjustment.

Wear a white dress shirt with a turndown or wing collar, French cuffs with cufflinks, and a black bow tie you tie yourself; pre-tied bows are noticeable and best avoided. Practice tying the bow a few days before the event, and watch a tutorial with the actual bow you will wear, since different fabrics behave differently. Cover the waist with a cummerbund or a low-cut waistcoat, which hides the shirt bunching at the trouser line and creates a clean line from chest to trouser. The cummerbund pleats face upward, traditionally to hold theatre tickets, and it should match the lapel facing in satin or grosgrain. These details are what make the outfit read as black tie rather than a dark suit with a bow tie.

Black patent leather oxfords are the traditional choice, polished to a mirror shine, with plain fronts rather than broguing or heavy decoration. Avoid regular leather dress shoes if you can, since they break the formality, and make sure your socks are black, long enough to cover the ankle when seated, and preferably silk or fine cotton. Grooming completes the look: a clean shave or neat beard, tidy hair, trimmed nails, and minimal fragrance, since strong scent fills a formal room. If you wear a watch, choose a slim dress watch on leather rather than a large sports watch. Black tie is about polish, and polish shows in the small things guests notice up close.

Within the rules, personality comes through in cufflinks, a pocket square, a watch, and the choice of lapel style. A subtle patterned pocket square, an interesting but tasteful watch, or velvet slippers instead of oxfords for a private event all signal style without breaking the code. A velvet dinner jacket in midnight blue or burgundy is acceptable at creative black-tie events, but stick to black for traditional weddings, galas, and formal dinners unless the invitation says otherwise. The rule is one statement piece, not five: if your cufflinks are bold, keep the pocket square quiet, and vice versa. Restraint reads as confidence.

Renting makes sense for a one-off event, especially if the rental house offers fitting and pressing, while buying makes sense if you attend black-tie events twice a year or more. When buying, choose a classic cut over a fashion-forward one, since a tuxedo should last a decade. On the day, check the full outfit in a full-length mirror, sit down to test trouser length and jacket pull, and pack a small kit: a lint roller, spare cufflinks, and a stain pen. Arrive early enough to fix a loose bow tie calmly rather than in a rush. A final check in natural light, not just bathroom light, catches lint and mismatched blacks that artificial light hides.

Black tie rewards getting the basics right: a well-fitted tuxedo, a proper shirt and bow tie, patent shoes, and one personal detail. Follow the rules, allow time for fitting and practice, and the style takes care of itself, leaving you free to enjoy the evening instead of worrying about the outfit.
